Research Project into Film Audiences

For this project I would like to find out how there is a difference in marketing between independent films and mainstream films, and what type of marketing is most effective. Also I hope to find out more on the exhibition of films and what is most popular way of viewing films. I will attempt to find out more on this, by gathering data using questionnaires. The questionnaires will include both quantative so that I am able to count up the data and create graphs and charts to help with my results. I will also include qualitative in my questionnaires. This will allow the interviewees to write what they think, and also will help me to get an insight into people's personal opinions and views.

I also want to find out about the audiences of films. I would like to find out how people's difference in gender, age, culture or class may effect what kind of films they enjoy. This may help me to find out what kind of things to include in my thriller, to help attract the audience I am aiming for. To do this I will probably create another questionnaire, if not an interview. I think that collecting data from other people will be the best way to find out what I need to know about the audience's for different types of films.

Audience Research Results

Where do you normally watch films?

As you can see from this graph most people watch films at Vue which is the cinema in the city centre so it is easier for people to get to. Cinema City is the other cinema in the city centre but it is out of the main city. Also it shows a different selection of films such as independent and a few specific mainstream films. People might not go here as they haven’t heard of the films because there aren’t any TV advertisements. There is only a fraction of people that actually go to Cinema City. A lot of people watch films on the television which are just a random selection of mainstream films, and occasionally independent.

Do you usually watch mainstream or independent films?

As you can see from these results only 1 person just watches independent films who was a 50-year-old lady. The rest were 16 or 17 year olds. This shows that most people aged 16-17 watch mainstream films and about half of them watch independent films as well. This is good to know as we were planning our thriller to be independent and to know that our target audience age will also watch independent films as well as mainstream. We will definitely make our thriller opening scene independent because we don’t have the mainstream equipment or money. Also from this graph it shows that maybe older people would enjoy our opening to a thriller, as it will be independent.

What do you like about mainstream films?

The main reason why people like mainstream films is because of the special effects, actors and the locations, having high budget they are able to do this. During our opening scene we will not be using famous locations as it is an independent film and they do not include them, mainly because of money but also it gives it a sense of reality for some viewers as they can imagine it happening in their own town. All of the people that said they enjoy special features in mainstream films were mainly male apart from one and all teenagers that are 16 or 17.

What do you like about independent films?

A majority of the people we asked said that they like the storylines because they are different and realistic. Another main reason why people like independent films is because of the actors as they are not ones you see everyday, which gives the sense of mystery. Whereas in mainstream films if you see an actor in more then one film you are likely to associate them with a different character.

Characters and Castings

Archie

Archie is going to be our main character in the film. He was originally part of a gang with a group of his freinds until the murder of his brother. He is aged 19/20 and was very close with his brother, and was known for his bad reputation. The death of his brother forced him to turn his back on the gang once and for all, as one of them was the reason his brother died.  At the beginning of the thriller we will show how hurt and lonely he feels without his brother, and this will set the opening scene in an effective way.

Nathan

Nathan is the brother of Archie and they are twins. In the gang he was the newest member and most innocent. This meant that he was always told what to do even though he wasn't comfortable with the decisions of the gang, although his brother was always there to look after him. Apart from one time. When Nathan refused to do a job for the leader of the gang, there were serious consequences, which resulted in his death.

Gang Leader/Murderer

In the opening of our thriller, you don't see much of the murderer, apart from the flashbacks. The fact that he is the leader of the gang, makes him have much more authority over the rest of the gang members. He is a very sly and serious character, and his gang is the most important thing to him. When it comes to the jobs and crimes they commit, he will do anything to get his own way. This leads to him murdering Nathan.

Castings

We decided to use my brother to play Archie, and because we decided Nathan is Archie's twin he played both of the brothers. There were some issues with this because, we are not yet sure how obvious it is that they are supposed to be twins, and are not just the same character. We thought that my brother Jack would be quite suitable because he is about the right age or a couple of years younger than what were looking for, but I think it will work well. Also it is convenient for us to use him, because it was easy to get hold of him at any time. It is the same reason with my Dad, as he is around at the time we want to film. My dad is going to play the murder and gang leader. He was originally supposed to be quite a lot older because he is more experienced and confident in committing crimes. However my Dad is probably slightly older than we would have prefered, but we didn't think it would be much of an issue if we dressed him up correctly.

Thriller Film Planning

Story boards

Locations

In the first shot we are going to use the location of the roof of the Castle Mall in Norwich. This is where he reminisces over the murder of his brother. We decided on this because we think that it relates well to the British gangster theme as it gives an idea of a typical English thcity, whilst showing shots of the grey, cloudy sky to also emphasize the setting of England. It relates to the thriller 'Essex Boys' in the way we will show the sky. Also it will be easy to get to because it is near to where we live.  Also in e scene afterwards we have decided to film the shots of him planning revenge in a cellar. Because the cellar is small, it makes the location seem quite claustrophobic which is common in thrillers. The flashback scenes are going to e shot in my garage, again because it is a small claustrophobic space which also relates to the beginning of  'Essex Boys' The cellar and garage are located in our houses,  so will be very convenient. We think that it will add tension to the opening of our thriller.

Photographs of cellar

Costumes, Props and Objects

As this is a British gangster thriller, we thought that hoodies, jeans, jackets and hats would be appropriate clothing for our characters. These costumes relate to other thrillers such as Bullet Boy and Kidulthood. Also in Essex Boys they were quite casual clothes - mostly jeans and jackets. So the idea also came from this. We will make sure that in the flashacks of the murder, the brother and murderer will also be wearing similar outfits, just to convey the fact that they may have been part of the same group.

We will use props such as:
- Chair
- Photo albums
- Table
- Phonebook
- Paper
- Pen
- Photo of murderer
- Gun
- One of the most important props is going to be a picture of the main character and his brother. This will help to show the relationship between these characters, and how they are connected.

The mise en scene will help to establish the type of character and their personality. For example, in the cellar where the brother plans his revenge on the murderer, the phonebooks, address books, pens, paper, photos etc are going to suggest that he is very determined to find the murderer in any way possible. However, when he gets angry and starts to push all these props onto the floor this will show how unstable and depressed he is about the death of his twin brother. Also the gun will definitely help to show how evil the gang leader is when he takes it out and points it at Nathan. It will bring out his character and suggest the type of things that the gang would have got into. Not only will the props help to do this but the costumes that they have on will hopefully also show what kind og people they are especially the leader. The black hoodie and black hat will help to convey the evil side of him.

A brief Synopsis of the plot

In the opening to my thriller the main character has flashblacks to the time when his brother was murdered in a garage. Whilst we see him become distressed, the setting turns into his cellar where we see him plotting revenge using pictures and other kind of information.

In this British Gangster thriller opening, we will be using the idea of flashbacks from Casino Royale. Also we are using settings similar to Essex Boys because of the grey sky and claustrophobic spaces, with the use of a cellar. The flashbacks may be in black and white which relates to the film Momento, which also uses the same effect.

Our target audience will be hooked because the characters in the film are a similar age group, which could make it easier to relate to. Also we hope that the music we chose will help attract the attention of the audience because it will help set the mood of the storyline.

Advert Evaluation

Maybelline - Falsies Volum’ Express Mascara
The use of image on this advert shows a young glamorous looking woman which tells the audience that this is how the product will affect them if they buy it. The slogan ‘It’s a false lash glam look in a tube. Instantly!’ links also to the theme of glamour, which draws the audience in with this catchy line about the product. The colour of the mascara tube is a bright purple which probably help attract the certain audience. The purple is repeated through the advert that fills the page in the woman’s bracelet, and part of her top etc. This could suggests that the mascara has almost become part of her and her lifestyle once she has started to use it, which implies the importance of the product.
If the advert had to relate to a genre I would probably suggest that it relates mostly to romance. There are not many clues that would imply that it is a particular genre but just because it’s a woman could show the romance as the audience of this product would probably be a similar audience to romance films. Also, I don’t think that the image particularly relates to any specific culture or country, as there is nothing that would suggest whether it is English or American or something completely different.
Similarly to the genre, there are not many give-aways that suggest a certain narrative or story but by the look in her eyes, and the way she is dressed up could suggest a story of lifestyle behind it. The look in her eyes suggests that she is gazing off and dreaming about something and perhaps the woman in the advert is looking for love or just found it.
The advert is not only selling the product, but it is also selling the lifestyle that comes with it, and the type of person you will become. It suggests that you will become a new improved person when having bought it. The woman in the picture has perfect skin and hair, so this makes the audience dream about having this lifestyle.
If there is a world that is represented in this advertisement, it could be portraying a fantasy world. It could be representing a positive attitude towards the audience’s world. However in some aspects, the advert seems to look slightly dangerous. The way the woman looks so serious, and is staring right at you suggests that there is something else lurking beneath her surface.
I don’t think that the model could really offend a particular audience in anyway as you can only see her face, therefore she is not showing too much skin. Also you can’t tell if she is a typical tall thin type of model, which could offend some public and set bad examples. However, her perfect skin and hair and make-up could make some audiences feel they need to look this way. In this sense it could put some women down and make them feel insignificant and not good enough.
The advert is probably aimed at women who are the same age as the model, which is approximately age 20-25, or ranging somewhere around that age group. Not only does the age of the model give a hint as to what audience is it aimed at, but so does the text. For example, when it says ‘glam look’ it uses slang. Most people that use this sort of language these days are those of a younger age, therefore the advertisement is aimed at people who are likely to use these types of words and relate to it.
Look was a bi-weekly, general-interest magazine published in Des Moines, Iowa from 1937 to 1971, with more of an emphasis on photographs than articles. A large-size magazine of 11 by 14 inches, it was generally considered the also-ran to Life magazine, which began publication only months earlier and ended in 1972. It is known for helping launch the career of film director Stanley Kubrick, who was a staff photographer. When the first issue went on sale in early 1937, it sold 705,000 copies. Although planned to begin with the January 1937 issue, the actual first issue of Look to be distributed was the February 1937 issue, numbered as Volume 1, Number 2. It was published monthly for five issues (February–May 1937), and then switched to bi-weekly starting with the May 11, 1937 issue. Page numbering on early issue counted the front cover as page one. Early issues, subtitled Monthly Picture Magazine, carried no advertising. The unusual format of the early issues featured layouts of photos with long captions or very short articles. The magazine's backers described it as "an experiment based on the tremendous unfilled demand for extraordinary news and feature pictures."
Overall, I think this advert is rather affective. As her face takes up a large amount of the page it draws in the target audience and the long black eyelashes attract the attention to that specific part of the image. The product in the corner of the page is made to be quite big and bright purple. This gives the mascara a positive attitude as it contains an appealing colour and writing font on the tube. I chose to analyse this advert as it was one of the first cosmetic adverts in the magazine that stood out and got my attention. I think the contrast of her pale skin and the dark background helps to draw the audience’s eyes straight to her face which is effective as her eyes are the centre of attention on the page. The way that the advertisement contains a few positive slogans such as “Our No.1 mascara” and “Create a false lash effect minus the glue” definitely gives the product more reliability and reassurance to whether the audience are making the right decision about buying it. I don’t think the advert has any major weaknesses, although it would be quite effective to see more of a story behind it. If there was perhaps a background, or we could see more of the image it might add more detail. However, I think it is a great example for a cosmetic advert and will help me now to design my own, maybe using some of the ideas in my own work.

The Male Gaze

The Male Gaze is a term that describes the tendency of works to assume a male viewpoint even if it does not have a specific narrative Point Of View, and in particular the tendency of works to present female characters as subjects of implicitly male visual appreciation. One of the common symptoms of Male Gaze include assuming that the audience will identify with male characters, and will have typically male experiences, preferences and expectations.

The male gaze in advertising is actually a fairly well-studied topic, and it is often what comes to mind when the term is invoked. This is because, more than just being an object of a gaze, the woman in the advertisement becomes what’s being bought and sold. The the male gaze enables women to be a commodity that helps the products to get sold.

Laura Mulvey introduced the concept of The Male Gaze as a feature of power asymmetry. In film, the male gaze occurs when the audience is put into the perspective of a man. A scene may linger on the curves of a woman's body, for instance. Laura Mulvey argues that the male gaze takes precedence over the female gaze. This can be reinterpreted as that the subjective male construction of feminine identity has too much prevalence over the subjective female construction of male identities

The theory suggests that male gaze denies women human agency,[citation needed] relegating them to the status of objects, hence, the woman reader and the woman viewer must experience the text's narrative secondarily, by identifying with a man's perspective

Preliminary Exercise Practise

My partner and I used a camera around school today to practise what sort of shots we are going to use in our final preliminary exercise. We decided that it would be a good idea to use close up shots of the cards when the two are playing cards. We decided to do this because it will make the game more tense as only the audience know what cards the other player has and who is going to win. When the two characters are walking in we are going to do an over the shoulder shot so you can't see this character until they have actually sat down at table. Also to keep the characters a mystery we have decided to film the other characters feet walking to the common room. Using these two ideas we can keep it a mystery from the audience who the characters are. Also its as if the other character doesn't know who they are playing which makes the game more exicting and tense as you don't know how the characters are going to react to each other. This is a video I found on youtube which helped me make sure I knew the main principles of the task and how to do them correctly:

Thriller Film Audience Research

What I want to find out:

- The audience's expectation's of independant/mainstream film
- What type of thrillers teenagers prefer
- What music is scary/tense
- What teenagers are scared of
- What storyline would appeal to them

How I am going to find out:

- Questionaire
- Interviews with film clips/posters
- Interviews with music clips
- Interviews with pictures/fim clips or questionaire.
- Give examples of story lines to find out what they prefer

What I expect to find out:

- I might expect to find out that people around the certificate age of 15 haven't seen many independent films, therefore don't have much expectations. I would think that for mainstream films, they would expect to see good actors, locations, and special affects.
- they might enjoy action, british gangster thriller? Although I would expect girls and boys views to be different.
- Jumpy or tense music
- I would expect real life situations and villans to be something that might scare the audience
- I think everyone will have different opinions on what storyline they prefer, but again I think that anything realistic would appeal to them.

Cosmetic Adverts Final Design

Aurora Perfume

Codes and Conventions
When planning my design for an advertisement me and Holly decided to create an advert for a perfume, using all the seasons. We wanted to create a storyboard affect showing that the product was available and suitable all year round. As a pair we decided that I would work on the the spring and autumn adverts, and Holly would work on the Summer and Winter. We tried to make the costumes suitable for the certain season. For example, scarf and hat for winter, and shorts and top for summer. For all adverts we placed a picture of the product in the low right hand corner, to keep it consistent. However, in the Autumn advert I thought it would be effective if the model was holding the perfume bottle and looking down at it smiling. I think this would represent how the perfume can change and improve your life, form how cheerful she looks. We added a slogan to the winter advert saying "escape the winter blues". We thought that this would be especially important for the winter one, because it suggests that this product can lighten upyour life, even in the worst of months.

In the Autumn one, I wanted it to look as if she was holding the bottle of perfume, so I took a picture of her with her hands out and photohopped a picture of the product into her hands. I changed the colour to a golden shade of yellow, to help bring out an autumn theme. Then we added the name of the product 'Aurora' to the perfume, to make it look more professional. For this advert I took a picture of the school field, surrounded by trees and added Hannah to the photo using photoshop. I thought it would be effective if I changed the background to black and white, because then it would make the the Hannah, the product and the leaves around her stand out more. It also suggests that the perfume can make you feel happier and brighter in Autumn, and attracts the audience.

For the spring advert, I wanted  the colour of the perfume bottle to reflect the colour of spring. So I used an image of a blossom tree, and made the changed the colour of the product using a similar pink. I took a picture of Hannah holding a flower to build on the spring affect and colour scheme. The way that she is looking upwards smiling could suggest that she is looking and hoping into the future. I wanted it to show the audience that buying the perfume could make there future a better place.

Representation
The social group that we wanted to be represented was the students that are currently at further education. We tried to make the adverts represent the lifestyle by using features that would appeal to them. For example, freedom. I think this is a very important aspect to this lifestyle, as the people this age might be feeling the need to escape from school work and stress. I think that the fact that all the adverts give a positive view on life at this age, will definitely improve the audience's attraction to the product. We wanted our advert to communicate to all students that life can be easier and less stressful whilst in education.

Target Audience
We were specifically aiming our product to an audience of females aged 16-18, and we thought that it would be a good idea to use my twin sister Hannah to model, and Holly for the winter one, as this would make it clearer who the product is aimed at. I think each advert has a bit of a narrative as I wanted to show that you can enjoy life in all seasons. It suggests that the model has an enjoyable life, which helps to sell the product aswell as a lifestyle.

Evaluation
I think that one of our main strengths is the use of a model that is the exact age of the target audience, as this makes it easier to grab the attentions of this audience. Also I think the settings and backgrounds of the adverts help to represent the seasons, and we tried to make the outfits and colour of the bottles relate to to the time of year aswell. One thing that I think could be a weakness, is the fact that we only had a slogan on one of the advertisements. I think it was more important to have one one winter one, however if we added one to all of them, it may have improved our work. Also we weren't sure if the fact that on the summer advert Holly isn't facing the camera would be a weakness. She is facing out to see, so the audience cannot see her face. Although I feel that this could show that she is looking into the future as if there is something waiting for her. I thought that this would work, as the message of our product was that life can be enjoyable and easy, leading to a happy future.

From Script to Screen: The differences between a mainstream and independent film

Mainstream films are very different from Independent films in many ways. One of the main differences is that independent films are generally produced by an individual or a small company, whereas mainstream films tend to me made by bigger companies such as Universal Pictures or Fox. Mainstream films need more money to be produced, so are generally made by successful, well-known film companies.
Mainstream films tend to involve an award winning director. For example: Richard Curtis who directed Love Actually or Christopher Nolan who directed Batman. The directors of independent films are often not well known, or even heard of. The production of mainstream films also differs from the way that independent films are produced. The locations in mainstream are often well known places that would involve a lot of money to film in the certain areas. For example, in Love Actually most of the film was shot in London, in sites such as: Trafalgar Square, Somerset house, Grosvenor Chapel and many more. Places like these would be very difficult for independent films to use because of the money issue, and the equipment needed to block around the site.
Another noticeable difference between the types of films is how mainstream films are able to use special effects of unrealistic storylines. The effects are so well produced that it is difficult to point out any drawbacks as they look so realistic. A good example of this is Avatar. Avatar is a fairly new release which includes new technology that took years to produce the film. The animated film development began in 1994 and after the release grossed at $2,740,405,721. This is completely different to independent films as they generally don’t include any special effects and stick to simple storylines, so that no effects are needed to be added. This keeps the budget of the film as low as possible.
Mainstream marketing includes adverts such as trailers in cinemas and TV, posters, internet advertising on websites that are commonly viewed in order to get people’s attention. Because the companies have the money to market their films in this way, more people are able to hear of it. An example of main screen marketing is the film The Boat That Rocked, created by Universal Pictures. Many different posters were created during the making of the film which included bright colours that looked very 60s. Which was when the film was set. The poster also included ratings from a newspaper to increase the publicity of the film in order to get more recognition. Generally, the marketing of independent films is characterized by limited release designed to build word-of-mouth or to reach small specialty audiences. Some independent market their films by the internet by discussing it on Internet forums or others attend independent film festivals or attend other small filmmakers premiere events.
The company’s film distributor is the one that releases the movie to public either theatrically or for home-viewing. Mainstream distribnution is usually are distributed at cinemas all around the world. Independent films don’t often appear in the cinema. When the film has been produced sometimes it will appear at a film festival or on a website. This contrasts with the mainstream distribution which are shown internationally.
